Sicily is one of the more important viticultural regions of Italy with 180,000 hectares dedicated to vines and an annual medium production of 8 million hectolitres. 20,000 hectares are dedicated to the 9 wines DOC (of controlled origin) for approximately 400.000 hectolitres, an income pro hectare clearly inferior to the Sicilian average.
Famous until some years ago for its wines rather strong in alcohol, Sicily harvest now the golden medals in particular with the magnificent Nero d'Avola. Thanks to a specific know-how inspired to the French methods, Sicily seems to conquer the market with interesting blends among which the very interesting Cerasuolo di Victoria. |
